Key Stage 3
The curriculum during the first three years of the Senior School (Years 7-9) is designed to give a broad and balanced education. Fifteen subjects are taught: English, Mathematics, Science (Biology, Chemistry & Physics), Art, Careers Education and Guidance, Design & Technology (Years 7 & 8 only), Drama, French, Geography, History, ICT, Life Skills, Music, PE and Spanish (from Year 8). The average size of teaching groups at KS3 is 14 pupils. Pupils are set by ability or selected specifically by specialist subject staff in English, Maths, Science and French. (In other subjects pupils are taught using groups selected for English, Maths or French.) The programme for Personal, Social and Health Education is delivered through a combination of tutorials during form time, in assemblies, via cross-curricular provision and through lessons for Careers Education & Guidance and Life Skills.
Key Stage 4
The curriculum in Years 10 and 11 offers a good range of subjects both at GCSE and IGCSE with some students accessing AS level course material. All pupils study a core of English, English Literature, Mathematics, French, Biology, Chemistry and Physics (currently examined at GCSE as ‘Science’ and ‘Additional Science’). Girls select a further three additional subjects from Art, Drama, Geography, History, ICT, Music and Spanish with the possibility of adding PE (short course), making a maximum of 10 GCSE subjects. In addition, each week, all pupils attend lessons in Careers Education & Guidance, Life Skills, PE and RE. The programme for Personal, Social and Health Education is delivered through a combination of tutorials during form time, in assemblies, via cross-curricular provision and through lessons for Careers Education & Guidance and Life Skills.
We are able to offer our Senior pupils at PGHS the opportunity to participate in a number of residential trips which is an extremely beneficial feature of the curriculum. Our Year 7 pupils enjoy a 3 day team-building residential course. In Year 8, pupils enjoy a residential Geography field trip to Dorset which greatly prepares them for their GCSE fieldwork.
