Physical Education

The Physical Education Department consists of four specialist members of staff, 2 full time and 2 part time. All staff teach a full range of activities across all age groups throughout the school.

At Palmers Green High School we want the girls to improve their knowledge, skills and understanding of a wide range of physical activities in different and challenging settings.The school feels it is important for this curriculum to be set in a safe and secure environment and through this caring philosophy the PE department aims to :-

  • encourage the girls to develop respect for one other, learn co-operation through team work, abide by and accept different rules, codes and routines and cope with both success and failure. 
  • improve the girl’s communication and listening skills whilst also promoting qualities such as creative and aesthetic awareness, self-esteem and self discipline.
  • offer a wide range of activities in the syllabus so that each girl will find at least one activity that they can pursue on leaving school.

Curriculum

During Years 7, 8 and 9, girls will participate in netball, hockey, dance, gymnastics, tennis, rounders and the activity taken will depend on the term. Year 7 take up one double lesson during the autumn and spring term for swimming. All Year 7 girls participate in 2 double and 1 single lesson and Years 8 & 9 participates in 1 triple and 1 double lesson for PE a week.

During Years 10 & 11 all girls participate in 1 triple and 1 single lesson a week. Health Related Fitness is taught throughout the year in the single lesson. In the autumn and spring terms the girls go to Southbury Leisure Centre, during their triple lesson, where they can choose from, aerobics, badminton, basketball, swimming and volleyball. During the summer term the activities change to athletics, tennis and rounders.

Year 7

Autumn and Spring Term: - Netball, Football, Dance (Rock and Roll/ Using props), Gymnastics and Swimming

Summer Term: - Athletics, Tennis and Rounders

Year 8

Autumn and Spring Term: - Netball, Football, Dance (Conflict/International) and Gymnastics

Summer Term: - Athletics, Tennis and Rounders

Year 9

Autumn and Spring Term: - Netball, Football, Dance (Jazz/Street) and Gymnastics.

Summer Term: - Athletics, Tennis and Rounders

GCSE

In Year 10 girls have the option to take GCSE Physical Education (Edexcel) as a short course. The course is mainly practical based and offers pupils the opportunity to be assessed through a broad range of activities. The examination consists of:

  • Written Examination: 40% of total grade
    • Healthy, active lifestyles and how they could benefit you.
    • Influences on your healthy, active lifestyle.
    • Exercise and fitness as part of your healthy, active lifestyle.
    • Physical activity as part of your healthy, active lifestyle.
    • Your personal health and wellbeing.
  • Practical Assessment: 60% of total grade
    • Practical assessment in two activities (48%)
    • Analysis of performance in one activity (12%)

Pupils will be required to offer two activities and complete their analysis of performance in one of these activities.

Extra Curricular Activities

The PE department is extremely committed to offering girls the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular sport, in the hope that physical activity will continue into adulthood.

House Competitions

All girls participate in House Competitions in swimming, netball and athletics which offers girls who do not represent the school the chance to be involved in competitive games. At the end of the year house points are added together to find the winners of the Senior House Sports Shield.

Inter School Competitions

PGHS enters six teams into the Barnet Netball League. We also enter teams into the Enfield Borough Athletics League and the Rounders leagues/tournaments. Tennis Fixtures are made depending on the ability and strength of the girls. The school hopes to enter the Enfield Girls Football League in the near future.

The girls leave us at the end of Year 11 and many return to tell us of their exploits at their new school which often includes them being selected to play for their new school/college team. As a department we want to give the girls an opportunity to find and enjoy an activity that they will continue into adulthood and through which they can appreciate the importance of physical activity for a healthy life.
