Carnegie Shadowing Book Club 2009
The mission of the library is to create a welcoming and secure environment that supports the whole school community in the process of learning and teaching, to raise standards of literacy and to encourage pupils in their enjoyment of books and reading.
The library houses a collection of high-quality, attractive resources for all the pupils in the school. It covers the range of curriculum areas and provides for all year groups. A love of books and reading is encouraged throughout the school and the library offers a varied selection of fiction covering different genres, interests and abilities for children, teenagers and adults. Additionally the library also stocks a wide range of videos and DVDs, encyclopaedias, dictionaries, foreign language texts (French, Spanish and German), and relevant Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) books. There is also a TV – DVD and whiteboard.
The pupils have open access to the library’s computers for work and research. Pupils are able to print off work and use the photocopier to prepare their coursework. The library has desks and seating for up to 20 pupils and the room on occasion doubles as a classroom. Lessons conducted in the library can often benefit from the research and resource function of the room and can enhance the student’s teaching and learning.
Julia Golding visits Palmers Green High School
The library is open at morning breaks and lunchtimes. Pupils can borrow up to three books for three weeks and one DVD/Video for a period of a week. Mrs Conlon, our School Librarian, is assisted by a team of pupil librarians who help manage and run the library. Whatever students need – whether it is looking for something new to read or help with a particular research project, Mrs Conlon is on hand to provide assistance.
At Palmers Green High School we aim to actively promote a life-long love of reading. As well as ensuring that the library is a comfortable and peaceful place to browse, read and borrow books, we also encourage reading by celebrating national and worldwide book events. These activities may include author visits, book clubs and fairs, competitions and quizzes, all of which are greatly enjoyed by the girls, often leading to renewed interest in particular authors and books.
The library also accommodates the careers library. Pupils can easily access information on courses, careers and sixth forms.
