To mark 25 years of Horrible Histories, The Sunday Times launched a competition asking readers between the ages of 8-14 to pick their favourite historical character and explain why they find them so fascinating. They received hundreds of entries celebrating everyone from Shakespeare to Steve Jobs.
The Sunday Times Magazine team had the tricky task of whittling the entries down to a shortlist of 26 and Lola was one of the winners. Here is her entry:
Mary Jane Seacole by Lola Kitty Kloot, aged 9
The person I have chosen is Mary Jane Seacole because she helped lots of people. The first reason I like Mary is because she was a British Jamaican and in those times people like her, who were not white skinned, would be treated differently but she wanted to stop all of that. The second reason is because when all of the soldiers came back from the Jamaican war she built a house which she called the British Hotel, which she described as “a mess-table and comfortable quarters for sick soldiers”. Mary was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
