Year 9 pupils had the opportunity to become journalists for a day at the Guardian News and Media Education Centre in central London this week. They attended a course entitled ‘Making a newspaper front page’ and enjoyed the challenge of researching and writing five ‘breaking news’ stories within a tight time schedule. The girls were given advice about the structure and style of newspaper report writing and provided with clear instructions about layout conventions. They were also given a brief tour of the open plan office areas and observed the all-important lunchtime meeting of The Guardian’s team of editors and sub-editors who were busy making editorial decisions about the next day’s edition. An informative and practical course was enjoyed by all and has inspired some of the girls to consider journalism as a career. Watch this space!
