Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

At PGHS, we are proud of our diverse body of pupils, families and staff, and it is a priority for us that everyone feels a strong sense of belonging within the PGHS community.

We champion tolerance and genuine inclusivity; anyone feeling left out or conscious of a difference between themselves and others will be listened to and supported. We work hard to ensure that this is also the case for members of our community who are neurodivergent.

This statement has been written as part of the School’s on-going commitment to demonstrating good practice, advancing equality and valuing diversity. All members of the School community are expected to be aware of and be part of this ethos, treating others with dignity at all time.

Our aims are to:

  • make sure that all pupils and staff are encouraged and supported to achieve their full potential;
  • provide an environment which recognises, respects and values diversity and shows consideration for the traditions, cultures and religious practices of people from different racial groups and different geographical regions;
  • challenge racial discrimination, racist behaviour, racist language or harassment, prejudice and stereotyping, however thoughtless or unintentional, using the opportunity to educate and promote greater understanding of the impact of such incidents;
  • prevent direct and indirect, overt and covert discrimination on grounds of race or geographical origin; and
  • assist in the identification of possible barriers to equality of opportunity for pupils and staff and to ensure that these barriers are addressed where possible.

The Equality Act 2010 provides a modern and accessible framework of discrimination law which protects individuals from unfair treatment and promotes a fair and more equal society. The Act protects people from discrimination on the basis of the following protected characteristics:

  • age
  • disability
  • gender reassignment
  • marriage and civil partnership
  • pregnancy and maternity
  • race
  • religion or belief
  • sex
  • sexual orientation.

We review our curriculum regularly to ensure that pupils of all backgrounds see themselves represented, and we promote all British values of tolerance, fairness, respect for other faiths and the rule of law and democracy across all curricular and extra-curricular provision.
