The Music Department consists of two academic teachers and nine peripatetic teaching staff who teach a wide range of instruments.
All pupils in Years 7 – 9 receive one double lessons of specialist music tuition per week. Pupils study a wide range of genres, all through the lens of performance, composition and critical listening. There is an emphasis on practical music making with a particular focus on developing keyboard skills.
Confident keyboard skills are very helpful when pupils choose to study music at GCSE and beyond. Senior pupils who play an orchestral instrument are invited to join the Senior Orchestra, and all Senior pupils are welcome and encouraged to sing in the Chamber Choir.
The Rock Band is also an extra-curricular highlight. There are regular performance opportunities for Senior pupils at school events and within school, such as playing music in assembly. Pupils also have the opportunity to perform in the bi-annual production in collaboration with the Drama department.
Individual Music Lessons
We have a dedicated team of self-employed peripatetic staff who offer individual music lessons in the following instruments: piano, violin, cello, guitar, voice, clarinet, saxophone, flute and recorder. Pupils receive ten 30-minute lessons each term and these are timetabled on a rotating basis so pupils do not repeatedly miss the same curriculum lesson. The cost of one 30-minute lesson is £25.

The Music Department offers a range of activities that the girls can become involved in such as Senior Orchestra, Senior Choir, Chamber Choir, a Whole School Orchestra. There is a very large uptake of extra-curricular musical activities with a large majority of pupils playing a musical instrument across the whole School. The Seniors also perform a bi-annual School Musical. The Chamber Choir visit Jesus College, Cambridge every year for their Choral Evensong and the Hart Carol Service in Central London, in addition to performing at our own prestigious events across the year.
Music awards may be offered to outstanding musicians who play an instrument or sing with exceptional ability. For further information on Music Awards, please click here.
