The Sunday Times Parent Power Guide’s Independent 11-16 School of the Year for Academic Excellence 2026, Palmers Green High School (PGHS) was founded in 1905 by Miss Alice Hum and has provided girls with an exceptional education for 120 years. At PGHS we specialise in educating girls, challenging and guiding them to achieve their full potential within our warm and friendly school environment. We are a very special ‘through-school’ where pupils progress in a familiar setting and benefit from seamless transitions across the Prep, Junior and Senior Schools. There is an authentic feeling of being one family where strong friendships are formed and extend beyond year groups.
At PGHS, all sections of the school (Preps, Juniors and Seniors) enjoy being part of our ‘one school’ community. Preps use the same facilities as the GCSE pupils in some subjects, e.g. Art, Music, PE and D&T, and Juniors enjoy Science in the laboratories. Throughout PGHS, small class sizes and excellent teaching enable rapid progress, whilst exciting extra-curricular activities encourage girls to develop into well-rounded individuals.
Recognising the importance of developing well-rounded individuals, we offer an exciting programme of extra-curricular activities. PGHS takes every opportunity to nurture your daughter’s passions and develop her skills, providing over 80 clubs per week.

Year 5 and 6 enjoyed a fantastic day out in London, taking in the sights from both the river and the sky. The trip began with a Thames Clipper cruise along the River Thames, where pupils spotted iconic landmarks including the Houses of Parliament, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Globe Theatre and Tower Bridge.
The highlight for both year groups was the flight on the London Eye. Standing beneath the giant wheel left pupils in awe, and as their capsule rose, they enjoyed breathtaking panoramic views across the city.
For Year 6, who have already read The London Eye Mystery, it was an exciting chance to step into the real setting of the story. For Year 5, the visit served as the perfect introduction before they begin reading the book after half‑term. Seeing the London Eye up close helped spark curiosity and bring the world of the story to life.

Mr Guthrie led an inspiring whole school assembly all about musical improvisation - creating your own melody on the spot using a specific group of notes. Pupils discovered that anyone can give it a go, no matter their age or musical experience!
He shared the three magic ingredients for improvising:
1️⃣ A musical instrument
2️⃣ A scale
3️⃣ A backing track
Using a keyboard, Mr Guthrie demonstrated improvisation with the C Blues Scale (C, Eb, F, F#, G, Bb, C) alongside a backing track in the same key. Pupils saw how even using just one or two notes can create a great beginner improvisation, and how adding more notes, patterns and rhythms increases the challenge.
We hope the demonstrations inspired our pupils to pick up their instruments at home and start creating their own music.🎵 🎶

How do chefs always know exactly how much to cook?
Year 6 pupils had great fun investigating the weights and measures needed to bake chocolate chip cookies and beetroot brownies.
The twist? The recipes didn’t match the correct quantities for the number of pupils in our school - so they had to use their knowledge of ratio and proportion to work out how much of each ingredient would really be needed to make enough for everyone.
It was a fantastic opportunity for the girls to apply real-world maths in a meaningful (and tasty!) way.

Year 4 treated their parents to a wonderful class assembly, beautifully retelling the powerful story from The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Q. Raúf.
The girls brought the narrative to life with great warmth, and the assembly concluded with a stunning dance performance that showcased the dance skills they have been developing this term.
It was a moving and heartfelt celebration of storytelling, creativity and empathy. Well done, Year 4!

Year 7 Debate Club has returned!
Miya and Luna launched the club before Christmas with a fun, engaging session full of games and a PowerPoint to boost confidence in public speaking.
This week they enjoyed a quick-fire debate on ‘Should school uniform be banned?!’ Our pupils took turns presenting their arguments, and the result was close, with ‘yes’ it should be banned winning by a small margin!
The club will run every other week at lunchtime throughout the Spring Term, and all Year 7 pupils are welcome.
