Computing and ICT at Palmers Green High School is taught across all year groups using laptops, iPads, and PCs, with a strong focus on online safety to ensure pupils understand how to use technology responsibly and securely. Coding is introduced in the Lower School through BlueBot floor robots and Purple Mash, which also includes activities in spreadsheets, databases, blogging, and 3D modelling.
Senior pupils use a range of tools including BBC micro: bit, HTML, Python, Blender, Scratch, and Adobe Illustrator. They are encouraged to explore, experiment, and develop their skills through hands-on projects and creative tasks.
In lessons, we never lose sight of the practical application of ICT, which is integral to working in School and the wider sphere of modern society. All girls leave with an excellent knowledge of ICT theory and an accomplished use of the main MS Applications, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. They use the knowledge and skills gained at PGHS to great advantage throughout their studies here and beyond into Sixth Form and University.
Curriculum
Year 7
Pupils begin by learning how to communicate safely online, with guidance on the responsible use of email, chat rooms, gaming platforms, and social media. They then move on to explore key areas of computing, including computer networks, digital media, programming, and spreadsheets.
Years 8 and 9
Pupils explore a wide range of computing topics that help them build digital skills and creativity. They design vector images using Adobe Illustrator and create animations in Blender. They learn how computer systems work by looking at the layers inside them and how information is shown in different ways — from early methods to modern sound and video. Pupils are introduced to cybersecurity and how to stay safe online. They build websites using HTML and CSS, using images they have edited themselves. They also learn how to read and understand data in data science lessons. Mobile app development lets them design simple apps with users in mind. Their coding skills grow through Python.
