At Palmers Green High School, we aim to empower pupils to develop their knowledge, skills and understanding across a wide range of physical activities in varied and engaging settings. The PE Department is committed to providing all girls with opportunities to enjoy sport through both curricular and extra-curricular programmes. We hope to foster a lifelong appreciation for physical activity.
Pupils excel in a variety of sports, supported by our excellent facilities at The Walker Ground and Southgate and Southbury Leisure Centre.
Throughout Years 7 and 8, pupils take part in a broad and balanced curriculum including Netball, Football, Tag Rugby, Tennis, Rounders, Athletics, Dance and Gymnastics. All Year 7 pupils also participate in swimming lessons and an interhouse swimming gala.
Pupils also have the opportunity to represent their House in inter-house competitions such as Sports Day, and the inter-house Netball Tournament.
In addition, weekly Netball and Rounders practices are held, where pupils can trial for selection to represent the school in leagues and tournaments. Pupils may also trial for Independent Schools fixtures, including Tennis Tournaments, Cross Country Championships and Swimming Galas, with the potential to qualify for national competitions.
GCSE PE is offered as an option for pupils in Years 10 and 11. For more details, please refer to the Options Booklet.
All pupils in Years 9–11 continue with core PE lessons, consisting of one triple lesson per week. In the Autumn and Spring Terms, pupils attend Southbury Leisure Centre for their triple lessons, choosing from a variety of activities including Aerobics, Badminton, Basketball, Swimming, Volleyball and Trampolining.
During the Summer Term, lessons move outdoors to The Walker Ground, where pupils participate in Athletics, Tennis and Rounders.
House Competitions
All girls participate in House Competitions in swimming, netball and athletics which offers girls who do not represent the School the chance to be involved in competitive games. At the end of the year, House points are added together and the winners of the Senior House Sports Shield are announced and celebrated.
Inter School Competitions
PGHS enters teams into the Enfield Netball League, Enfield Borough Athletics League and the Rounders leagues/tournaments. Tennis Fixtures are arranged depending on the ability and strength of the girls
