Mathematics

We have a highly Skilled Mathematics Department at PGHS and pupils follow the National Curriculum and study to GCSE level. All girls aim to take the linear Higher level course administered by Edexcel. The course covers the attainment targets of Number, Algebra, Shape, Space and Measures (Geometry), and Handling Data (Statistics and Probability) as specified in the National Curriculum.

Year 7

Students are taught in two parallel, mixed ability groups of approximately 15 pupils. They have five periods of Mathematics per week each thirty five minutes long. These are organised as two double lessons and one single lesson.

Year 8

Students are set into two groups. The setting is based on test results during the year, summer examination results and teacher assessment. The size of each group varies according to the ability of each year group. The sets are blocked on the timetable to allow for movement between groups. They have five periods of Mathematics per week each thirty five minutes long. These are organised as two double lessons and one single lesson.

Year 9

Students are set in two groups. The setting is based on test results during the year, summer examination results and teacher assessment. Extra Curricular Activities

Maths Club

The aim of the Maths club is to promote a very positive attitude to Mathematics. It is hoped that the club provides students with a fun atmosphere and allays any fears that girls might have of the subject. During Maths club the pupils have access to Mathematical games and puzzles.

Maths Surgery

The aim of Maths surgery is to give one to one attention to pupils who might have difficulty with a topic or who have been absent and have missed work. In this way students can build up their confidence of the subject and revise and consolidate topics taught. It is also an opportunity to improve test results by taking re-tests.

UKMT Mathematical Challenge

All Year 7 and 8 pupils take part in the UKMT Junior Mathematics Challenge. UKMT Mathematical Challenges are designed to stimulate interest in mathematics. They are tests of reasoning and mental agility which can be taken without special preparation or revision. Girls can be awarded a Bronze, Silver or Gold certificate.
